Sacchi House

A small straw-roof house, previously a “prison” for samurai engineers who failed to complete a project. The Edo period structure was reinforced with structural boards and steel bracing beneath the bamboo structure to withstand the heavy straw roof. By getting rid of the internal walls that compartmentalized the activity in the house, the renovation converts the house into a thoroughfare that connects the northern Japanese garden and the river on the south side, allowing for indoor-outdoor living.
